Fake News, Witch Hunts, & Conspiracy Theories
AN INFODEMIOLOGIST’S GUIDE TO THE TRUTH
PAULINE W. HOFFMANN
What’s the truth and what’s a lie? What is the difference between misinformation and disinformation?
Looking to weaponize information, talking heads and other so-called experts use disinformation and conspiracy theories to prey on our fears and emotions. Why? It can be to get us to act and behave in a certain way. It may be done for some gain like money, power, or even an election.
There is so much being done to create and craft messages to counter disinformation but not as much to explain the infodemic itself. Not much to explain science, health and other topics to those unfamiliar with it. To be fair, it can be difficult to explain one’s field or passion because we are immersed in it and know it well. We don’t always know what others don’t know. What seems obvious may not be.
That’s where this book comes in. Fake News, Witch Hunts, and Conspiracy Theories is truth-telling through research and education to help you survive the infodemic.

What People Are Saying
-
Dr. Richard Lee, Executive Director at Jandoli Institute
“Once upon a time, it was easy to tell the difference between the truth and a lie, but those days are now a thing of the past. Today, we are bombarded by disinformation, misinformation and conspiracy theories–much of it coming from carefully crafted messages with ulterior motives. How do we separate truth from fiction? Fake News, Witch Hunts, and Conspiracy Theories is a good place to start. Through research, data and a unique sense of humor, Dr. Pauline Hoffmann provides a roadmap to finding the truth amid all the clutter of today’s information world.”
-
Elizabeth C. Ortega, ECO Strategic Communications
“Dr. Pauline Hoffman is my former communications professor and a loyal ally because she is not afraid of big emotions. She has a quick wit about life and an ability to move forward to dig deeper, to talk and jump in to cultivate relationships. Her adeptness to engage in difficult conversations is a catalyst for respect and connection.”
-
Louis Jacobson, Senior Correspondent at PolitiFact, a fact-checking site
“Dr. Pauline Hoffmann … scrutinizes the decline of truthfulness and trust in both public and private discourse. Weaving in the history of the Revolutionary War-era backlash against early smallpox vaccinations, the use of fluoride in water, and the origin of the term ‘snake oil’ salesman, Hoffmann seeks to arm responsible citizens with the knowledge and tools to detect and reject falsehoods. Misinformation and disinformation ‘play on our fears,’ she writes, ‘They reinforce our already held beliefs.’”
